Filipa da Silva was reinstated this Monday as president of the Academic Association of the University of Algarve, in a ceremony that took place at Teatro Lethes, in Faro. A session that already had the presence of the new dean of UAlg António Branco, who asked students to become more involved in the life of the academy.

«One of the UAlg's most worrying indexes – and which little is said – is the small number of students involved in the constitution of lists for the Pedagogical Councils of the organic units and the very small percentage of those who express themselves through voting, whenever they stop. that's invited. In fact, on the one hand, it is frequent for teachers to organize those lists, often asking students they know for the special favor of accepting to be part of them; on the other hand, the abstention rates in electoral acts that I have been aware of reach as high as 90 percent», illustrated António Branco.

As last December's AAUAlg elections they are, moreover, an example of this. In none of the bodies was there more than one list and there were even some pedagogical centers that did not have any competing list. The turnout rate was less than 10 percent.

The rector justified his concern with his belief that “the quality of a Democracy also depends very much on the degree of citizen involvement in the constitution of lists and in exercising the right to vote, even though it cannot be reduced to these two dimensions. ».

António Branco also defended the role of education, “in the fight against propaganda”. "The most pernicious is political and ideological propaganda, which is why it should be considered the Academy's Number 1 Enemy," he said.

At yesterday's ceremony, in addition to Filipa Braz da Silva and her team, the table of the Magna Assembly, whose president is André Matos, the Supervisory Board, chaired by Raquel Pedro, and the pedagogical centers of the Faculty of Science and Technology, of the Faculty of Economics, School of Health and School of Management, Hospitality and Tourism of Portimão.
