VMER may be down in the Algarve on Christmas and New Year's Eve

Emergency and Resuscitation Medical Vehicles (VMER) operating in the district of Faro they may not be in operation on the night of December 24th to 25th and on New Year's Eve, the Left Bloc denounced yesterday.

At issue, according to BE, is the announcement of lowering the hourly payment of doctors who ensure the crew of the VMER, to values ranging between four and eight euros.

The Block guarantees that this situation is leading doctors to abandon this service, with the consequent stop of VMER vehicles on Christmas and New Year's Eve.

Blocist MPs Cecília Honório and João Semedo consider it “essential that the Government guarantees the operation of the three VMER vehicles operating in the district of Faro, especially on Christmas and New Year's Eve, with medical staff qualified for the functions».

For the Left Block, it is «important to ensure that these VMER inoperability scenarios do not reoccur», and it is urgent to obtain the necessary explanations from the Board of Directors of the Hospital Center of Algarve (CHA).

For the deputies of the Bloc, it is not acceptable that the Board of Directors of the CHA «unilaterally decides to lower the wages of workers and, because of the bad decision of the CHA, it is incomprehensible that the population is harmed, since there is no guarantee that any of the three VMER vehicles are in operation on the nights in question'.

"The inoperability of one of the VMERs would be incomprehensible in any situation, but it is even more inexplicable when it occurs at one of the most critical times for health services and at a time when the Algarve has more people, since, to the resident population, add family members and also all the tourists who seek the region at this time of year», they conclude.

VMER is a pre-hospital intervention vehicle designed to quickly transport a medical team to the patient's location.

Its team consists of a doctor and a nurse and has advanced life support equipment.

the district of Faro has three VMER, in Faro, Portimão and Albufeira, all under the responsibility of the newly created Centro Hospitalar do Algarve.
