The University of Algarve salutes the municipality of Tavira as a community representing Portugal in the transnational application, for the success achieved in the classification of the Mediterranean Diet as Intangible Heritage of Humanity, as well as all the members who were part of the inter-ministerial commission that led the process in Portugal.

This candidacy, approved yesterday at the 8th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage, in Baku, Azerbaijan, was proposed by seven States with ancient Mediterranean cultures: Portugal, Cyprus, Croatia, Greece, Spain, Italy and Morocco .

The University of Algarve recalls that it supported the Portuguese candidacy of the Mediterranean Diet to be classified as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO and states that it is «committed to promoting a broad public and multidisciplinary debate around this theme».

Recently, UAlg promoted a Cycle of Seminars on Mediterranean Diet, in collaboration with the Municipality of Tavira, the Ministry of Agriculture, Sea, Environment, Spatial Planning (MAMAOT) and the Order of Nutritionists.

This Cycle had the participation of several experts from public institutions, national and regional associations, who debated the importance of the Mediterranean Diet, a landmark of culture and heritage, a lifestyle deeply rooted in the experiences of the Portuguese, which is important to preserve and transmit to the generations to come.
