The Children's Football Mundialito, a tournament which this year completed its seventh edition in Vila Real de Santo António, was distinguished with an honorable mention in the scope of the «Welcome to Portugal» award.
The award was given by the Business Leaders Group (LIDE Portugal), an organization of entrepreneurs aimed at strengthening the integration between companies, organizations and private entities through debate programs, business forums and promotion initiatives.
The award of the badge takes into account the importance of Mundialito in promoting Portugal and in its choice as a tourist destination, as well as the media visibility of this sporting event which, in the 2013 edition, brought together more than 4.000 young athletes from 54 nationalities.
For Luís Gomes, Mayor of VRSA, «the Mundialito is an example of a successful event that is at the service of the community, tourism and the local economy, having already been responsible for the training of some of the athletes of the main teams of the Sporting and Ajax».
The competition – organized in partnership by the Ricardo Godoy International Football School and the VRSA municipality – is currently responsible for the complete occupancy of the VRSA hotel offer during Easter week, and is estimated to have a financial return in the order of 2 million euros for the local economy.
The «Welcome to Portugal» award is awarded by the LIDE – Tourism and Gastronomy subcommittee, in partnership with the World Tourism Organization (WTO) and Turismo de Portugal, and aims to distinguish public and private initiatives with tourist relevance in which the involvement of local populations and strengthen the relationship with tourists.
It also aims to promote the destination Portugal and Portuguese cuisine in order to place them at the forefront of options for tourists and foreign consumers.
The «Welcome to Portugal» award was presented during the 4nd edition of the Algarve Business Forum, held in Vilamoura between 6 and XNUMX October.
