The elderly population of Azinhal and Odeleite will demonstrate with the Regional Health Administration of the Algarve (ARS), in Faro, from 15:00 on 22 October, in protest against the closure of Health Extensions in those locations.

The elderly will travel on various buses, launching the Odeleite Parish Council “the challenge for the entire population to join this cause”.

This local authority stresses, in a press release, that «from threat to reality, and since October 14th, the health extensions of Azinhal and Odeleite, in the municipality of Castro Marim, have closed their doors to populations, mostly aged. The population and mayors are against it and have already scheduled a demonstration and delivery of a petition at the ARS Algarve».

On 10 October, «the direction of the Sotavento Algarvio Health Centers Group (ACES), whose directors are Dr. Manuel Janeiro and Dr. Maria José Salgueiro, communicated to the Parish Councils of Azinhal and Odeleite the closure of the extensions of health of these localities from October 14th», he adds.

"The measure is not accepted by a population that is mostly aged and resident in the Algarve mountains, who receive low pensions and without any public transport network".

According to the presidents of the Junta de Odeleite and Azinhal, Valter Matias and António Baltazar, it is “an inhuman decision that leads this humble population, already weakened by age and a life of sacrifice, to manifest itself in Faro, on the 22nd of October, in front of the ARS Algarve».

The mayors announced that a petition for the entire population will also be handed over, expressing their “repudiation of this violent decision”.

They also warn that “health savings cannot be blind and completely abandon populations that are already fragile and defenseless”.
