The Maritime Authority of the Port of Olhão raised a notice regarding the construction of a heliport, without license and by popular initiative, on the island of Culatra. So far, this has been the only authority that has taken action on the construction of the infrastructure, done against the law.

It will have been following a communiqué released by the Algarve Nucleus of the League for the Protection of Nature (LPN Algarve) that the Captaincy of the Port of Olhão officially registered the construction of the heliport, as reported this Wednesday by the newspaper «Público». A measure that will not, by itself, have any consequences.

According to Sul Informação he found out, the news report is made by the Maritime Authority and sent to various entities with responsibility for the matter. But the captaincy does not have the power to seize or fine those responsible for building the heliport, competences reserved to the environmental authorities or to the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission.

It is also not clear who or what entity is targeted in the news release. Our newspaper tried to contact the commander of Porto de Olhão Luís Duarte, to clarify the content of the report, but this was not possible because he was absent from the captaincy and "uncontactable" at an official ceremony today.

Thus, it is not yet certain that measures will be taken by the competent authorities, as LPN Algarve demanded about two weeks ago, shortly after the population of Ilha da Culatra united and built the helipad.

At the time, the leader of the Ilha da Culatra Residents Association justified the construction of the infrastructure with security reasons, as this will serve “only to deal with emergency situations”, namely the rapid evacuation of people with acute health problems.

LPN Algarve criticized above all the passivity of official entities before a work that has advanced in the eyes of all, without any authorization.
