The PS accused the Government of preparing the closing of "two important health units in the municipality of Castro Marim, only after the municipal elections, in a decision that raises questions about the opportunity for the announcement".

A position taken the day before the Minister of Health Paulo Macedo inaugurate the  Azinhal Continuing Care Unit, in a ceremony scheduled for this Friday at 15 hours.

The socialist deputies elected by the Algarve questioned the Government about “its intentions regarding the health extensions of the parishes of Odeleite and Azinhal, namely if the extensions will in fact close, when did the Government take the decision and what are the alternatives foreseen for the population of the two parishes».

«Since Minister Paulo Macedo is in the Algarve, exactly in the parish where he is thinking of closing one of the Health Extensions, he must clarify this situation once and for all and not hide the truth from the population», considered PS deputy Miguel Freitas, in a press release.

«This closure, if verified, is part of the policy of budget cuts that have been made by the government, without social sensitivity, drastically reducing the proximity health services and, with this, further degrading their access to the population more fragile”, added the parliamentarian.

The socialists say that “despite the physical conditions of the extension of Odeleite and some computer problems in both extensions, these two USF provided 3.962 consultations, 707 of which were first consultations, which, in the opinion of the PS parliamentarians, clearly show the importance of these two extensions to the municipality of Castro Marim, taking into account the universe of registered users (390 in Odeleite and 428 in Azinhal)».

For Socialist Deputies Miguel Freitas and João Soares, “the importance of these two health units increases as more than 50 percent of the population of each parish is over 65 years old, an age group that needs greater care in the area of prevention, early detection and management of chronic diseases'.
