Last Saturday, the Loulé Council inaugurated the Monument to the Combatant, in Largo Bartolomeu Dias, Campina de Cima, in the city of Loulé. This is a tribute from the League of Combatants – Loulé Nucleus and City Council to all those who fought on behalf of the country, with many of them losing their lives in combat.

“This sculptural element symbolically reflects the respect and memory that the entire society owes to combatants. It consists of two materials: concrete, associated with hardness and sacrifice, and stone, a material that expresses nobility. Next to the monument, a tree intends to break the coldness of the element and, at the same time, conveys the concept of life. The entire sculptural body is based on the symbol of the combatants», revealed the Câmara de Loulé.

The design of the project was the responsibility of the architect Sofia Pontes, from the Municipality of Loulé. Its symbology is based on three ideas: “respect, memory and justice”.

At the monument's inauguration ceremony, the president of the Chamber of Loulé considered that “this is one more symbol that will beautify the city of Loulé and, simultaneously, it is the fulfillment of a promise to the Loulé Center, since this was a “debt'” that Loulé had with his ex-combatants».

The mayor added that this tribute is also "a sign of hope, peace, solidarity and well-being for young people to no longer want war."
