The PSD deputy elected by the Algarve Mendes Bota asked the Government to "inspect the flow of traffic in the Algarve Stadium", following the flow problems that occurred in the Portugal-Holland game, which took place in this sports infrastructure about two weeks ago.

Mendes Bota asked the Secretary of State for Sports and Youth to investigate the reasons for such anomaly, “it is difficult to understand because if the infrastructure, access and parking of this Stadium are the best in Portugal, there is something in the operational system of traffic planning, which is not working well, and which needs to be corrected and improved for the future».

The Algarve parliamentarian also asked “that a meeting be held with all the parties interested in the matter (Government, local authorities of Faro and Loulé, GNR or others), aimed at finding a lasting solution'.

The question posed by the PSD deputy, in full:

«Dear Ms. President of the Assembly of the Republic,

The Algarve Stadium is a sports infrastructure, built for the 2004 European Football Championship by the Municipal Councils of Faro and Loulé, held in Portugal, which has unique conditions for holding major sporting, musical or other events.

With a strategic central location, next to Via do Infante (A22), with direct connections to the motorway to Lisbon (A2) or to Spain, accessible by the ER 125, 8 Kms from the international airport of Faro, and served by the Parque das Cidades train station, the Estádio Algarve could not be better served by accessibility.

With a capacity for around 30.000 spectators, this stadium has guaranteed free parking for 4.800 light vehicles and 256 buses. What other stadiums in Portugal can offer such conditions to the public who flock to the shows? Furthermore, this Stadium has 20 entrance doors with 53 optical reading turnstiles. Nothing can justify the occurrence of heavy traffic jams, which wear out citizens, and lead a considerable number to take their seats after the event. show has started.

According to the testimonies that reached the subscribing deputy, this was what happened on the 14th of August 2013, when the football match between the main teams of Portugal and the Netherlands was held, which the Portuguese Football Federation scheduled in good time, and in which the capacity of the Estádio Algarve was completely sold out.

This is a situation that has already occurred on other occasions and other events. However, at the time of the 2004 European Football Championship, and under the strict guidelines of UEFA, there were no such traffic jams.
However, if the infrastructure, accesses and parking of this Stadium are the best in Portugal, there is something in the operational system of traffic management that is not working well, and that needs to be corrected and improved for the future.

Especially in the summer season, but not only, the Estádio Algarve has unique conditions in Portugal for holding this type of events, and the Portuguese Football Federation deserves recognition from the Algarve and tourists who come to the Algarve, for putting this infrastructure on the calendar national team or other competitions, contributing to the promotion of the region and its economic development.

It is in this condition that, under the constitutional, legal and regulatory provisions in force, I request you. please obtain an answer to the following questions from the Secretary of State for Sport:

– Is the Secretary of State for Sport and Youth available to investigate the underlying reasons for the problems of traffic congestion during the Portugal-Netherlands football match, held on August 14th?

– The Secretary of State for Sport and Youth is available to promote a meeting with the Portuguese Football Federation, the Municipal Chambers of Faro and Loulé, the GNR or other entities intervening in the matter in order to find a lasting solution that would overcome the aforementioned inconveniences and enhance the exceptional accessibility and parking conditions that the Algarve Stadium has?».
