The Faro sailor Hugo Rocha won two world titles in the space of 15 days. His most recent title, World Champion in the J80 class, was achieved on 15 July, in a race held in Marseille, but the sailor had already won another title, in Italy, in ORC, as a tactician. Scugnizza by Vicenzo de Blasio.

In this last event, Hugo Rocha had on board an international crew consisting of Pavel Saveenko, Alex Semenov, Francisco Palácio and David de la Plazza, with whom he had never worked, but the harmony was perfect, as can be seen from the results achieved.

The Chamber of Faro stresses, in a statement, that the city is "proud to have seen Hugo Rocha grow as a sailor and a great promoter of this sport".

Also for this reason, the City Council «publicly renders the recognition due to Hugo Rocha, who has contributed so much to dignify the name of Faro and from Portugal. We are a municipality with inseparable links to the sea and the local authority has been making an effort to ensure that the supply of nautical sports is a constant throughout the year. The Nautical Center of Praia de Faro it is an example of this and a winning bet».

Hugo Rocha was born in Faro where he was born in April 1972 and started sailing at the age of 10 in the schools of the General Directorate of Sport. Since then, his taste for the sport has grown and to date he has won several titles at national level and in international regattas.

He has been present at the Olympic Games, namely in 1992 (Barcelona) and Atlanta (96) where he won bronze medal with Nuno Barreto. This Olympic medal ended a period of 35 years in which Portugal could not get any medals in this sport.

Hugo Rocha was awarded the Medal of Merit – Gold Degree, in the celebrations of the Day of the Municipality of FaroIn 1996.
