The 25th anniversary of the classification of the Protected Area of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina is being celebrated until the 12th of July, through initiatives that aim to mark the date and affirm the importance of one of the best preserved coastal areas in Europe.

The official celebration ceremony will take place on July 9, at 17:30 pm, at Forte do Pessegueiro, Porto Covo, with an exhibition, lecture and theater.

On the 12th of July, at 16 pm, a meeting for reflection and “natural fraternization” will be held, with the participation of historical and contemporary contributors to the classification and management of the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina, which will take place at the School Restaurant Professional from Odemira.

Another of the activities will be the Open Day of the PNSACV, to be held between the 6th and 12th of July, through a partnership with entities such as QUERCUS and several agricultural and livestock production companies with headquarters and/or activity in the area of the PNSACV.

There will be several environmental actions, pedestrian walks and boat trips on the Mira river, visits to company headquarters, mountain biking circuit, an astronomy session about the constellations, among many others.

In 1988, this area was classified as a Protected Landscape, with the objective of preserving the existing natural values and regulating the occupation of the space (Decree-Law No. 241/88, of 7th July).

In 1995, the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina was created, covering the same territorial area and including an adjacent marine area (Regulatory Decree No. 26/95, of 21 September).

The PNSACV area has a great diversity of coastal habitats, where a flora enriched with the presence of endemic species, avifauna and ichthyofauna play a prominent role.

Among the existing habitats in this region, there is a significant marine area: cliffs, beaches, dunes, heaths and wetlands (with estuaries, lagoon systems, watercourses, temporary lagoons, small dams and a vast coastal wetland).
