The works in the Dr. João Dias museum center have already been launched in Alcoutim, a space that will be created in the former premises of the Hospital da Misericórdia and aims to make known the estate left by the Alcoutenejo surgeon and benefactor, as well as his life and achievements. The intervention is budgeted at 74 euros and should last for three months.
«Dr. João Dias was born in Tenência, parish of Odeleite, municipality of Castro Marim, but came to settle in Alcoutim and exercise his profession here, after graduating in Coimbra, in 1927. He died in 1955, with only 57 years old, but his memory continues to this day, as a good doctor and extraordinary surgeon. People from far away lands came to Alcoutim in search of this famous doctor», recalled the Chamber of Alcoutim, in a press release.
The museological nucleus will have «the doctor's private library, material from the office, medical instruments and surgical material, personal objects, some photographs and newspapers from the period with references to his well-deserving figure».
João Dias already has a bust erected at the entrance to Alcoutim, a tribute to the village's population.
