PS/Algarve defended that it should move towards Regionalization, after the Constitutional Court rejected the Statute of Intermunicipal Entities proposed by the Government. The Algarve socialists considered the lead “a clear victory for the autonomous and democratic Local Government” and took the opportunity to demand administrative regions.

"This deliberation is an opportunity for us to launch a national debate on the competences of Local Authorities, correcting recent errors regarding the merger and union of parishes against the will of the populations and fulfilling the constitutional precept of concretely establishing administrative regions, such as true local authorities of supra-municipal scope endowed with democratic legitimacy», considered the PS/Algarve in a press release.

Recalling that in March of this year, the PS/Algarve had expressed its opposition to the proposals presented by the Government, through the declaration of vote made by deputy Miguel Freitas, the socialists defend that it is «absolutely necessary to establish a clear framework of competences of the different bodies, which is a matter prior to any change in territorial design”.

«In the sphere of this Reform, we also defend the reconfiguration and strengthening of the competences of Local Authorities, namely in the areas of health, education and social action, providing them with the financial means and human resources necessary to maintain the Social State, or in the fields economic development and civil protection, among others, enabling them to work in an association regime, if they deem it more appropriate,” the party added.

The PS/Algarve points out the “inexistence of an intermediate level of power” as “one of the main obstacles to a sustained reform of local and regional administration in continental territory”.

"In this context, the PS/Algarve understands that this is the time to put the Administrative Regionalization process back on the political agenda, starting a new process that is qualitatively different from the previous one, which may involve the non-simultaneity in the creation of regions, through a new map and for a redefinition of competences that guarantee its institutional, economic and social sustainability”, summarized the socialists.
