The workshop “Feeding Fields for Scavenging Birds” is taking place this Friday, May 24, at Herdade dos Lameirões, in Safara (Moura).

This is an initiative promoted under the LIFE project "Promotion of the Habitat of the Iberian Lynx and the Black Vulture in the Southeast of Portugal” (acronym Habitat Lince Abutre), which is responsible for the LPN – League for the Protection of Nature.

This workshop, which has the support of DRAP Alentejo, the managing entity of Herdade dos Lameirões, aims to explain the objective, functioning and advantages of the network of feeding fields for scavenger birds created by the project LIFE Habitat Lynx Vulture as part of efforts to conserve the Black Vulture at the regional level, and will end with a visit to the Community Feeding Camp for Scavenging Birds located on this farm, where a supply by the project veterinarian will be demonstrated.

The workshop is free to enter and is intended for the general public and, in particular, for all livestock producers from the farms supplying this network of food fields, whose role is fundamental for its functioning.

The LIFE Habitat Lince Abutre Project, lasting four years (January 2010 to December 2013), is being implemented in the regions of Mourão, Moura and Barrancos, Vale do Guadiana and Serra do Caldeirão, in the areas of the Natura Network 2000 existing there.

The aim of this project is to contribute to improving the survival, feeding and reproduction conditions of the Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) and the black vulture (Aegypius monachus) in the Southeast of Portugal, also benefiting a wide range of other threatened species.

To this end, collaboration protocols were established with local agents, namely owners, managers, farmers and hunters, in order to promote the conservation of the natural landscape that serves as a habitat for the Iberian lynx and the black vulture.

It is also intended to raise awareness and involve society in the conservation of Nature and Biodiversity in the region.
