Initiatives centered on the Portimão Museum, the Alcalar Interpretation Center and the Roman ruins of Abicada mark the event. International Day of Monuments and Sites program, this year under the theme “Heritage, Education and Identity”, in Portimão.

The program, carried out in partnership with the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, starts at 18 pm on April 30, the date on which the anniversary is celebrated, with the conference “Villa Romana da Abicada: What Future?”, which will take place in the auditorium of the Museum of Portimão and in which the following themes will be addressed: “Abicada: Previous interventions and perspectives” (Rui Parreira – Regional Directorate for Culture of the Algarve), “Recent archaeological work in Abicada” (Eduardo Porfírio – Palimpsest) and “The Museum of Portimão as a partner in the enhancement of Abicada” (José Gameiro – director of the Portimão Museum).

On April 20, the invitation is addressed to the whole family, who will be able to spend “An Afternoon in Prehistory” in Alcalar and participate in yet another unique recreation, in which visitors will discover and practice some of the activities that were part of the daily life in that village five thousand years ago.

Between 14:00 and 18:30, participants will have the opportunity to test their hunting skills and experience the workshops of pottery, milling, music and monument builders, among others.

From 18:30 pm, visual artist Jorge Rocha will provide a performance on a journey through the flavors of Prehistory: cooking in the landscape, he will reveal which foods and how they were made, what aromas and flavors had the meals of the contemporary community of the monuments of Alcalar, crossing with the consumption habits and gastronomic behavior of our society, in an intervention in collaboration with the cultural association Xerem, within the scope of the PALATO: Art, Gastronomy and Heritage project.

Finally, on April 21, there will be a tour of the Villa Romana da Abicada, whose meeting point is scheduled for 9:30 am at the Clube Recreativo da Figueira, with registrations (limited to a maximum of 30 people) through the Museum from Portimão, by telephone 282 405 230 or e-mail [email protected], where additional information on these initiatives may also be requested.
