A trip to the flavors of Prehistory, culminating in an afternoon spent in Alcalar, music and staged visits to monuments, commented reading of classical Greco-Roman texts, walking tours to discover the heritage, conferences, are part of the program for the International Day celebrations Monuments and Sites, between 18 and 21 April.

And because times are one of contention, good news: public participation in the various activities, as well as admission to monuments, is free.

In a program coordinated by the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, with the participation of several other entities and partners, the events will take place in the Roman Ruins of Milreu, Castle of Paderne, Castle of Loulé, Villa Romana da Abicada, Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar, Ermida Our Lady of Guadalupe, Fortress of Sagres and Aljezur Castle.

Dália Paulo, regional director of Culture, told the Sul Informação that, despite the crisis, “it was not difficult” to bring together several partners in organizing the vast program of activities. "There is a whole path that we have already taken with these entities", he added, adding that the partnerships do not imply money, but only "the availability of human and logistical resources".

“In these times it even ends up being easier, because the institutions have already realized that, alone, they cannot do things and that, above all, they will not have the visibility that a joint program of this type can achieve”.

It all starts on April 18, at Paderne Castle (Albufeira), where, between 10:00 and 12:00, guided tours will take place at the Municipal Museum of Archeology of Albufeira.

Also at 10 am, but at the other end of the Algarve, at the Fortaleza de Sagres, there will be a «Journey to the landscape(s) we inhabit». This is a walking tour on the Sagres Promontory guided by Carla Cabrita (prior registration is limited to 00 people per tour), organized by DRCAlgarve and the company Walkin'Sagres. The tour repeats at 15:15.

Nearby, at the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe, in Raposeira (Vila do Bispo), at 10:00 am the pedagogical workshop of the 5 senses with Ana Custódio begins, entitled «Come discover and feel our Chapel», which has the support of the Grouping of Schools and Vila do Bispo Municipal Council.

At 11:00 am, at Alcaidaria do Castelo de Loulé, the Al-Mutamid Route project will be presented, which counts as regional partners with the Municipalities of Loulé, Silves and Tavira.

At midday, there will be a visit to the Castle and the Islamic Baths of Loulé, guided by archaeologist Alexandra Pires.

Villa Romana da Abicada joins program for the first time

At the Museu de Portimão, at 18 pm, the conference “Recent archaeological work in the municipality of Portimão” will take place, by Eduardo Porfírio, from the company Palimpsesto, who will talk about the most recent interventions in the Villa Roman Church of Abicada.

Dália Paulo emphasizes that, contrary to what people think, in the last two years archaeological work has been carried out in the Abicada, but admits that "it is necessary to make them known". Hence the need for this year, and for the first time, to have two activities linked to this Roman archaeological site, which is a national monument.

«In 2011, Abicada underwent two interventions: one of structural consolidation, with the construction of a support wall for the Villa it did not fall apart, and another was the removal of the mosaics, placing them in safety in the Museum of Portimão».

«We are now going to promote the restoration of the mosaics, which will be the starting point for an exhibition on the Abicada, at the Museu de Portimão, which has yet to be date. The goal is for the tiles to be returned to the Villa da Abicada, but when this monument has conditions to visit, which at the moment it doesn't».

«We know that Abicada is not as we would like it, but the idea, with the activities that we are now going to promote as part of the International Day of Monuments and Sites, is to sensitize people to the need to protect that site, as well as show what is already there. it was done there and that we have projects for the future», added the regional director of Culture.

Milreu is the stage for activities for various tastes

Also on April 18, at 18:30 pm, but at Villa Romana of Milreu, in Estoi (Faro), there will be a presentation of the cycle “Música nos Monumentos”, in partnership with FNAC and the Municipal Councils of Olhão, Loulé, Vila Real de Santo António and Vila do Bispo.

Closing this Thursday, the first day of the commemorations of the International Day of Monuments and Sites, at FNAC do Algarve Shopping, in Guia (Albufeira), at 21 pm, Maria João Vasconcelos, director of the Soares dos Reis National Museum, in Porto, will give a conference.

This is an activity that takes place outside the monuments and spaces linked to them. Dália Paulo stresses that the director of the Soares dos Reis National Museum is going to talk about "what this thing about heritage and education is", in a lecture thinking about technicians, teachers and the general public.

On Friday, the 19th, at 18:30 pm, the Villa Romana of Milreu, in Estoi (Faro), receives the project «In situ amateurs», a commented reading of classic Greco-Roman texts, by Adriana Nogueira, professor at the University of Algarve.

This will be the first reading of a cycle that will last until November, with a break in the summer, with readings always in Milreu, on the third Thursday of each month.

«These are people who love the classical world and who know a lot about the subject, but who, with the exception of Adriana Nogueira, who is a professor in this area at the University of Algarve, are true amateurs. They are doctors, nurses. The purpose of these readings is to awaken the love for the classics», commented the regional director of Culture.

On Saturday, April 20, activities continue in Milreu. Thus, between 9:30 am and 13:00 pm and again from 14:00 pm to 17:00 pm, the group of theater interns from Escola Secundária Pinheiro e Rosa (Faro) promotes staged visits to Villa Romana of Milreu, in Estoi.

Exoteric Fair at Paderne Castle

Also on Saturday, the 20th, between 14 pm and 22 pm, the Castle of Paderne (Albufeira) will host an Exoteric Fair, organized by DRCAlgarve, Albufeira Town Hall and Paderne Parish Council.

The regional director of Culture explained to Sul Informação that this will be a way of making «people who like this space and use it for their exoteric rituals to understand that it is important that the monument continues to exist and in good conditions of conservation». In other words, the idea is to «win the complicity of these people» and make them understand that they only have to gain «if the monument is not affected».

Dália Paulo added that the rituals that take place at the Castle of Paderne are, in essence, “a contemporary use” of the place and a different way of “living with the heritage”.

The Exoteric Fair, he added, will have everything that is expected of an event of this kind, starting with the reading of the future in the cards, sale of exoteric products. Interesting to say the least…

The program planned for Aljezur Castle is quite different, which motivates the inauguration of a historical, cultural and environmental circuit in this town, which starts and meets at 14 pm, at Largo do Mercado. The initiative is organized by the City Council and the Association for the Defense of the Historical and Archaeological Heritage of Aljezur.

What did the prehistorics eat?

But the highlight of this Saturday will be the afternoon of Prehistory at the Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar (14:00 pm to 18:30 pm), which includes a historical recreation of daily life in a prehistoric community, with workshops for weaving, pottery, milling, hunting, music.

The afternoon culminates, at 18 pm, with a gastronomic performance by the artist Jorge Rocha and by the archaeologists Rui Parreira, Elena Móran and Isabel Soares, under the motto of the «journey to the flavors of Prehistory. These activities are organized by DRCAlgarve and the Municipal Museum of Portimão.

To close these four days dedicated to the Monuments with a flourish, on Sunday, the 21st, at 9:30 am, there will be a walking tour of the Villa Romana da Abicada, supervised by biologist Filipe Bally. The meeting point will be at the Clube Recreativo da Figueira, and prior registration is mandatory for a limit of 30 people.

At 16 pm, the Academy of Music of Lagos will give a concert at the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça, in the Fortaleza de Sagres.

Proposed by ICOMOS and coordinated at national level by the Directorate General for Cultural Heritage (formerly Igespar), «the theme for 2013 “Heritage + Education = Identity” presents us with the challenge and reflection on these distinct, but transversal and fundamental vectors for an active and systematic educational work, with different pedagogies, essential for the re-appropriation of cultural values, the rescue of memories and the reconstruction of the feelings of identity of contemporary communities», stresses the Regional Directorate of Culture.
