The municipalities of Vila do Bispo (Algarve) and Reguengos de Monsaraz (Alentejo) announced today that they will also join the “Earth Hour”, which is marked on Saturday, the 23rd, worldwide, to alert to the need for a change in attitude towards climate change, announced today the municipality.

In the case of Reguengos de Monsaraz, the intention is to contribute with a positive action in defense of the planet and enhance the concept of astrotourism and the Dark Sky Alqueva reserve.

Thus, on Saturday, between 20:30 pm and 21:30 pm, the lighting in the Paços do Município building and the Municipal Auditorium of Reguengos de Monsaraz will be switched off.

In the municipality of Vila do Bispo, the lights will be turned off in the Town Hall, Cultural Centre, Municipal Warehouse, Municipal Archive and the Interpretation Centre.

The City Council also appeals to the population in general to adhere to this symbolic act, turning off, if possible, the lights, television, computer, alarm clock, or any other appliance in their homes.

Earth Hour is a global event of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) network that invites people, businesses, governments and communities to turn off the lights in their homes, buildings and monuments for one hour against global warming and to achieve a mode of more sustainable life. O blackout World Cup lasts 60 minutes, between 20:30 pm and 21:30 pm.

Created in 2007 in Sydney, the initiative is present in all major cities on all continents, with 2012 countries and territories joining in 152.

In Portugal, 97 municipalities joined and hundreds of national emblematic monuments were left in the dark, as was the case of the Jerónimos Monastery.
