One Fairy Soul, two E-Chairs, one Figue. These are just some of the original pieces present in the “Design & Ofícios” exhibition, inaugurated on Saturday and which can be seen at the Museu de Portimão until the 28th of April.

The second edition of the creative residency “Design & Ofícios 2”, which took place as usual in São Brás de Alportel, resulted in eight exclusive and original prototypes, the product of the creative union between young designers and artisans.

The project aims to combine innovation with tradition, thus creating, through a three-day residency, an incubator from which new ideas and solutions have emerged in terms of crafts, furniture and equipment design.

The pieces now on display at the Portimão Museum have in common the use of materials and/or handcraft techniques characteristic of the Algarve mountains, such as cork, palm construction, trapology.

According to the project's promoters, the intention is to «create a platform of attachment to traditional culture, of creating opportunities for the participants, based on sustainable and environmentally-friendly socio-economic development».

As those responsible for the project said in a recent interview with the program «Impressions». Sul Informação and from Rádio Universitária do Algarve RUA FM, the main objective is to reinvent handcrafted products, putting eco-design at their service, while bringing together new creators and experienced artisans.

At the opening of the exhibition in Portimão, Bruno Boto, one of the coordinators of the initiative, told the Sul Informação that the pieces resulting from these extended weekends of creativity can be ordered. For this, just contact the project through the Southern Designers Association website or your email [email protected] or telephone 289878697.

The third edition of the creative residency “Design & Ofícios” is already scheduled for the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th of June, at Antigo Lagar de Azeite (current municipal carpentry) in São Brás. Registration is open until May 20th.

Sandra Louro, one of the initiative's commissioners, revealed at the opening of the exhibition, at the Portimão Museum, that this year much attention will be paid to another traditional material from the Algarve mountains, the tabua, which has been used over the centuries, for example, to make the chairs seats.

Who knows what may now emerge from the combination of the creativity of the young designers enrolled in the residency and the artisans with whom they will work in the third edition?
