The recent publication of the report “Assessment of Users' Access to Continuing Health Care”, prepared by the Health Regulatory Authority, places the Algarve in the regions with the most restricted access to convalescent units and palliative care, underlines the PS/Algarve in press release.

According to the socialists, "this situation is due only to the joint decision" of the ARS Algarve and the Board of Directors of the Hospital de Faro after the 20-bed Convalescent Unit had been closed, operating in the inpatient unit of the Loulé Health Center under the management of the Hospital de Faro, relocating it in the Hospital itself, and subsequently proceeding to its definitive closure, in August 2012, «not having put into operation the Palliative Care Unit with capacity for 15 beds foreseen for one of the floors of the outpatient building of that Hospital».

The conclusions of the report now published, under the responsibility of the Health Regulatory Authority, «not only confirm the position of the PS Algarve, but also expose the lack of a regional strategy for the health area, and in particular the little attention given to it. implementation and operation of integrated continuous care units».

The PS/Algarve regrets that «the regional responsible for health policies have understood, contrary to what is recommended by national and international entities, and the orientation of the Ministry of Health, to reduce the existing installed capacity in the region in the areas of palliative care and convalescence , hindering the access of about 23.000 elderly people, about 26% of the elderly population, as mentioned in the Report».

The Algarve socialists, in a note signed by their leader António Eusébio, claim to share and corroborate the recommendations of the Health Regulatory Authority report «in order to increase the offer in terms of convalescent and palliative units, returning to the area of care continued in the Algarve to resume the vanguardism it has always had since 2006 and which allowed it to serve as a guide to good practices throughout the country».

"It's time for regional health officials to recognize their mistakes and actually amend their decisions, leaving promises of openings, which are always postponed, and putting into operation the convalescent and palliative care units that the Algarve needs, without further ado. delays”, concludes the PS/Algarve.
