A 58-year-old Spanish crew member with symptoms of heart attack, who was on board the Moroccan fishing vessel “Sueños”, fishing about 400 km west of Cape São Vicente, was during the Early morning today, evacuated by helicopter, in an operation conducted by the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Lisbon).

The request for medical assistance was received at MRCC Lisbon through its Spanish counterpart MRCC Madrid, and, after a medical evaluation carried out by CODU-Mar (Orientation Center for Urgent Patients at Sea) of INEM, the medical evacuation of the crew was decided. with the rules and procedures in force.

The MRCC Lisbon assumed the coordination of operations, within its competences, committing for this purpose an EH-101 Merlin helicopter, with an INEM medical team on board, and a C295 aircraft of the Portuguese Air Force.

The media arrived at the site around 3:30 am. However, given the helicopter's autonomy and the high distance that the fishing vessel was from Montijo, the helicopter was unable to carry out the evacuation, having returned to the base to refuel.

At 7:07 am, the helicopter took off with a new INEM medical team, supported again by the C-295 aircraft.

The evacuation was then successful, with the EH-101 helicopter landing at Figo Maduro airport (Lisbon) at 10:28 am, and the crew was taken to the hospital in São José, in a stable situation.
