After Madeira in 2011 and the Azores in 2012, Faro it was the city chosen by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees to hold the 3rd Seminar on Western Sahara, which took place between the 2nd and the 8th of February.

were in Faro members of the High Commission, representatives of the Moroccan Government and the Polisario Front political movement, as well as more than 30 refugees from that region.

This seminar is part of a UNHCR humanitarian program known as “Confidence Generation Measures”, whose objective is to bring together Saharawi families who have been separated for more than 38 years, being the longest-lasting refugee situation in the world, as well as to complement the efforts of the UN and of the interested parties to find a political solution for the Saharawi people, which will make it possible to return to their homeland.

With this program and the holding of these seminars, the High Commission “intends to build a humanitarian bridge between Tindouf and El Aaiún”, as stated Athar Sultan-Khan, chief of staff of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, António Guterres, during the opening ceremony of the seminar in Faro.
