The Budget and Major Options of the Plan for 2013 of the Municipality of Monchique reach about 14,8 million euros, which represents a reduction of nearly 2,5 million compared to last year.

The approval was already made in the Municipal Assembly of Monchique, with eight votes in favor of the PSD and 10 abstentions from the PS, which made the documents viable.

Rui André, Mayor of Monchique, explains that the Budget and the GPs «had as a presupposition the particularly difficult moment, of recessive economic situation, that we are all going through». "This significant decrease in the general Budget values is the fulfillment of what we said in the preparatory meetings of the documents and, for us, an approximation of the budgetary realism that is required in the times and in the socio-economic, legal and political conditions of the Country", he said yet.

“We tried to make a very realistic proposal of the Great Plan Options, including the co-financed projects, not forgetting the support to the community in times that appear to be difficult. This document reflects the reinforcement of policies that promote greater social cohesion and the reduction of asymmetries existing in the territory, such as the construction of Lar de Marmelete and the Alferce Day Center (under construction)», added the social mayor. democrat.

According to Rui André, the Municipality of Monchique will continue to «give visibility to the actions foreseen in the Gerontological Plan and we will have to focus on boosting the Local Volunteer and Technical Assistance Banks and on the CPCJ's beginning of operation, as well as strengthening the support for young students in the county via Scholarships and others. We cannot neglect the investment in Education, namely the launch of the restoration of the Rural Educational Center of Marmelete and keep all the others in conditions for their efficient functioning».

Tourism, environment and gastronomy are priorities

The improvement of the environmental quality is another of the mountain council's bets for 2013, through the large investment in the area of the Environment (in progress), more than 4,7 million euros. The criteria inherent to the Monchique PDM Review will also be presented, while the Agenda 21 program will come to an end.

In Tourism, it is planned to bet «on the differentiation of the Monchique product, continuing to mark the agenda of Gastronomic Tourism and, in the scope of Nature Tourism», as well as the conclusion of the Veredas de Monchique Action – Via Algarviana 2.

«Having the respective financing and approval, we will still have the much-awaited Multipurpose Pavilion that will be our Fair and Exhibition Park», adds the Monchiquense mayor.

On the other hand, he stresses, "we are in a position to promote the installation of the Monchique Business Reception area, and we will continue to promote energy efficiency, in the present case of public lighting, which is still in the experimentation/implementation phase together with EDP and also in the reduction of current expenditure on expenses with municipal buildings. The effort we maintain to improve Rural Electrification should also be highlighted».

2013 should also be the year in which the installation of the Monchique Interpretive Center in Fóia will finally move forward, as well as the continuity of events and fairs «that promote local products, support the local economy through concerted actions between different sectors, namely actions with Local Commerce, the promotion of several Seminars/lectures, the launch of brochures and documents that intend to publicize our local products and the construction/improvement of ponds/dams to support the fight against forest fires, or to aerial or terrestrial means, and other prevention actions in the scope of Forest Fires, trying to keep our Forest free from major fires, an essential sector of the local economy».

Civil Protection remains at the top of concerns

Associating these aspects with Civil Protection, the City Council provides support for the prevention and combat of forest fires, support for the Monchique Volunteer Fire Brigade, with the delivery of yet another Forest Fire Fighting vehicle, and also assumes «the challenge of reinstalling the Monchique Fire Department in Marmelete with more dignified conditions».

Also in this chapter, the entire process for the construction of the Monchique Civil Protection Resource Center will be promoted, “since we already have the projects that were submitted to the Competition concluded. It is also intended to maintain the cultural events that we have been running, such as the Youth Week, Book Fair, Cultural Nights, among others».

The Budget and GOP also foresee «the challenges of organizing and improving road access, such as the construction of a new access to S. Roque, which will allow a reorganization of the traffic flow in the main town of the municipality».
