The Municipality of Monchique will award 37 scholarships to students residing in the Municipality for the academic year 2012/2013, in an investment that will amount to 90 thousand euros.

Support is intended for students who do not have sufficient means to support the expenses corresponding to attending higher education.

Over 10 months, a maximum monthly amount corresponding to 242.5 Euros is granted, that is, half of the national minimum wage, totaling 2 425 Euros per year to young people who enter or attend higher education establishments recognized by the Ministry of Education.

This measure arose from a proposal by the president of the Monchiquense Chamber, Rui André. «Incidentally, the City Council has made direct support to Higher Education Students in its Social component a priority, increasing the number of Grants Granted, from 19 grants in 2008/2009 to 26 in 2009/2010 (already with the new executive in office), 30 in 2010/2011, 34 in 2011/2012 and for 2012/2013 37 Scholarships were approved at the last Chamber Meeting (100% of eligible candidates according to the Regulation in force)», revealed the municipality in a press release.

“In education, the economic difficulties that affect some households constitute a serious obstacle for young people to continue their studies. In municipalities with rural characteristics, as in the case of Monchique, these difficulties are even more felt, and the City Council responded affirmatively to the challenge of supporting and contributing to higher education students via Scholarships», considered Rui André.
