The Ecological Party “Os Verdes” considers that “what the Minister of Environment wants to do to the National Ecological Reserve is an environmental crime”.

Today, at the Parliamentary Committee on the Environment, “The Greens” confronted the Minister of Agriculture, Sea, Environment and Spatial Planning with the intention that she has already expressed to put an end to the National Ecological Reserve (REN).

Deputy Heloísa Apolónia expressed astonishment at the fact that the Minister of the Environment did not know about the REN regime, when she characterized it only as a regime for minimizing natural risks, «which "forced" the deputy ecologist to read the legislation and the different regimes of REN, from 1983, 1990 and 2008, which even reveal one of REN's central objectives, which is to contribute to the connectivity and ecological coherence of the fundamental Nature Conservation network».

Even so, according to “Os Verdes”, “the Minister devalued the importance of REN, having demonstrated that it is her real intention to destroy this protection regime, which is unacceptable from the perspective of the PEV and should deserve strong opposition from environmentalists and ecologists».

"The Greens" consider, in a statement that the Sul Informação had access, that “this eagerness to destroy territorial protection regimes demonstrates the way in which the Government devalues the natural heritage, the preservation of ecosystems and the need for the regulated use of natural resources”.

«Under the pretext of reducing bureaucracy and simplifying processes, the Minister of Environment is preparing to commit real environmental crimes, such as ending REN, lightening the Environmental Impact Assessment regime, or approving a new afforestation and reforestation regime that liberalizes the eucalyptus plantation, just to give a few examples. It's not about reducing bureaucracy at all… it's about completely weakening our legal framework for environmental protection and removing the obstacle of the environment from the front of powerful interests at stake!”, they also say.

"After all, there is no doubt: the Minister of Economy says that environmental rules are an obstacle to industrialization (read to economic power) and the Minister of the Environment unacceptably practices what that member of the Government says... because that is the logic of a Government that, just as it despises the people, despises the environment! Because, what the PEV says is that both the people and the environment are crucial for a sustainable economy structurally directed towards development», concludes “The Greens”.
