The presentation of Phase 1 of the Plan for Mobility and Ordering Circulation in the Ria Formosa was the highlight of the celebrations, in Olhão, of the National Day of the Sea (16 November).

The plan was presented by landscape architect Gonçalo Gomes, at a session at the Real Marina Hotel & Spa, which was also attended by the mayor of Olhão Francisco Leal and the director of the Southern Classified Areas Management department of the Conservation Institute of Nature and Forests, João Alves.

The main objectives of the Plan, according to Gonçalo Gomes, are the definition of a mobility framework that allows the maintenance of a favorable state of conservation of the lagoon ecosystem and organize and ensure the existence of answers to the different needs of those who work or live , as well as those who visit Ria.

But it is also essential to organize and qualify their mobility, which can materialize with the interventions provided for in the Strategic Plan of the Ria Formosa Rehabilitation and Enhancement Intervention (PEIRVRF), which will allow a requalification of the riverside areas and urban centers of the islands -barrier.

The works of Phase 1, referring to the elaboration of the diagnosis of the current situation of the Ria, are practically finished.

This diagnosis results in the characterization of the legal and/or strategic conditions that influence the intervention area, the identification of agents with interests and action (direct or indirect) in this area, the identification of the volume of naval and land traffic and its characteristics, as well as the infrastructures that serve it.

The Plan defines eight territorial units of analysis, which “divide the Ria Formosa into functionally coherent areas, in order to interpret its dynamics globally, but taking into account the local particularities that occur throughout the intervention area”.

"In order to close this phase and consolidate possible future evolution scenarios for Ria Formosa, which will be the target of the Proposed Mobility Plan and Circulation Planning in Ria Formosa, it is now necessary to listen to the sectors of activity that are developed in the daily, gathering the contributions of those who experience, first hand, the evolution of the Ria Formosa”, announced the landscape architect.

Thus, the phase of public involvement will soon begin, individualized for each of the sectors of activity, in which an attempt will be made to obtain a characterization of the particular expectations and concerns to be included in the territorial model for managing mobility in development.
