Bridges, jetties, aqueducts, municipal rainwater drainage system, electricity poles and municipal roads suffered extensive damage on 16 November, in the municipality of Monchique, due to bad weather in the Algarve.

The technical services of the City Council are still "quantifying the damage" caused by this phenomenon, which this Friday was visited by the mayor Rui André, together with the District Commander of Relief Operations of the Algarve Abel Gomes, the commander of the Monchique Volunteer Fire Department and the City Council Division Chiefs.

The objective is to present to the Government a request for support for the replacement of these infrastructures for the services of the population. Monchique hopes to be able to access the Municipal Emergency Fund, to which the municipalities of Silves and Lagoa, affected by a tornado that same day 16, will also be able to appeal.

The damage happened all over the municipality of Monchique, namely in the areas of Cansino, Carvalho de Baixo, Perna da Negra and Foz do Fojo, among others.

Another place that suffered considerable damage was the initial section (towards Monchique/Nave) of the Estrada Velha rural street, which collapsed. There, the municipal services confirmed that the rainwater collector, which is installed at a depth of more than two meters, was totally damaged, "since the existing shackles are fractured, which will imply a time-consuming and costly intervention for the municipality», adds mayor Rui André. The circulation of the road even had to be stopped.

On his Facebook wall, Monchique president Rui André emphasizes that «despite not having been news on television, we have been making an inventory of the damage caused by last Friday's sudden storm and, in some cases, there are situations that compel a major intervention and investment to restore normality, which, due to the scarcity of means and resources, will take some time. To the affected populations, a word of hope and hoping that the resources we already have on the ground can provide the necessary response».
