This Saturday, November 24th, the Vila Real de Santo António City Council started the reforestation actions foreseen in the «Common Forest» project and carried out, in the Camaleão picnic park, an awareness day in the National Forest of Dunas Coastlines of VRSA.

Overall, between November 2012 and February 2013, the project foresees the planting of around 3 thousand trees in that space included in the National Network of Protected Areas and in the Natura 2000 Network.

On Saturday, the first trees were symbolically planted, in an initiative organized by the Local Volunteer Bank of Vila Real de Santo António.

In addition to the autarchy, the project involves the National Forest Authority (AFN), the Institute for Nature Conservation and Biodiversity (ICNB), the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP) and the National Association for Nature Conservation (Quercus), which established a partnership with a view to creating a program to encourage reforestation with native Portuguese forests and national seeds.

Locally, the action has the support of the Natural Reserve of Sapal de Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António, which will indicate which land to plant and will identify priority areas for the renewal of the existing vegetation cover.

In addition to logistics, the municipality ensures the transport of trees, from the nurseries to the planting site, involving the Municipal Civil Protection Service (forest sappers) in the maintenance and surveillance of the planted area and including an educational aspect in the project.

To this end, students from the municipality participate in the context of environmental projects developed in the school context, namely the «eco-schools», through which signs will be created with information on the planted species.
