This week, the PCP accused the Government of "failing to promise" made to shellfish gatherers in Ria Formosa to "request the General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture for a study to assess the impact of shellfish harvesting in the Ria Formosa's total protection areas." Shellfish gatherers in this lagoon area argue that the exercise of their activity "duly framed and regulated, does not jeopardize the protection and conservation of natural resources and values."

According to the Communist Parliamentary Group, following a question about the execution of this study that it submitted to the Ministry of the Sea, Agriculture, Environment and Spatial Planning in February, the Government guaranteed that it would commission the study and that it would be completed. "until 3 September 2012, that is, until the date when the Land Use Plan for the Ria Formosa Natural Park could be revised".

After this date, the PCP again questioned the Government on the same matter, but the «Ministry, in its response, informed that the study had not been completed, for budgetary reasons, and that, after all, the revision of the Land Use Plan of the Ria Formosa Natural Park is not a priority».

“In this way, the Government breaks the promise made to the shellfish collectors to study the possibility of allowing the capture of shellfish in the areas of total protection and to revise, accordingly, the Planning Plan of the Natural Park of Ria Formosa, showing, with this attitude , a total contempt for the shellfish collectors of the Ria Formosa», conclude the communists.
