The Municipal Assembly of Castro Marim unanimously voted a motion of protest and indignation by the elected members of the Social Democratic Party, in that local body, against the proposal of the PS of Vila Real de Santo António, which defends the merger of the three Municipalities of Baixo Guadiana .

The motion considers the proposal of the socialists from Vilarrealis as "nonsense and devoid of any sense".

The document presented by the PSD argues that «the Municipal Assembly of Vila Real de Santo António went too far in having voted on the Socialist Party's proposal, called “a reflection document of the three Municipalities of Baixo Guadiana”, namely because, «that know, those elected in the municipalities of the two counties concerned, much less Castromarinenses or Alcoutenejos, did not assign any mandate to the Socialist Party and the Municipal Assembly of Vila Real de Santo António, to decide on the future of their territory».

Here is the text of the unanimously approved motion:

«It was with astonishment and enormous disappointment that the elected members of the Social Democratic Party in the Municipal Assembly of Castro Marim learned of a preposterous proposal, stripped of any meaning by the Socialist Party of Vila Real de Santo António, which recommended the Government to merge the former municipality with Castro Marim and Alcoutim, and which was approved by the Municipal Assembly of VRSA

The Municipal Assembly of Vila Real de Santo António went too far by voting on the Socialist Party proposal, called “a reflection document of the 3 Municipalities of Baixo Guadiana” for several reasons:

As far as is known, those elected in the municipalities of the two councils concerned, much less Castromarinenses or Alcoutenejos, did not assign any mandate to the Socialist Party and the Municipal Assembly of Vila Real de Santo António, to decide on the future of their territory.

Then, why not merge the identity and history of two counties 500 years apart from the county of Vila Real de Santo António, in some political melting pot, with the tired justification, which is to fight the economic crisis existing in them or for because of family ties, traditions and the great river of the South, which bathes the Lower Guadiana.

In this motion of the Social Democratic Party members in the Castro Marim Municipal Assembly there is a question to the Socialist Party's municipal deputies:

Does Castro Marim's Socialist Party agree with the proposal of the PS of Vila Real de Santo António, which defends the merger of the three municipalities as an ambitious project and a national objective for the socialists in Vila Real?

The members of the Social Democratic Party elected at the Castro Marim Municipal Assembly propose that this Local Authority approve a vote of protest and indignation over the proposal of the PS of Vila Real de Santo António, which seeks nothing more than to snatch up the identity and history of the municipalities of Castro Marim and Alcoutim.

The President of the Board of the Municipal Assembly of Castro Marim is further requested to send this document to the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and to the Technical Unit for the Administrative Reorganization of the Territory, which operates in the Assembly of the Republic.
