The 2nd photographic race in the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António, this year on “Water Heritages”, identifying elements of the region's heritage and landscape, is scheduled for September 29 (Saturday), as part of the European Heritage Days .

Mines, canhas, wells, waterwheels, aqueducts, tanks, cisterns, dams, fountains mark and identify, even today, the Algarve territory, especially the barrocal with its gardens and orchards. A cultural landscape crafted by man, century after century where the heritage of the Romans, Arabs and the populations that succeeded them overlap.

Much of this hydraulic technology (constructions and ingenuity) remained in use in agriculture, without major changes, until the mid-century. XX, when new irrigation and water supply systems began to become widespread. They are, for all that, distinctive marks in the landscape and local memory.

Also on the coast, where communities turned to the sea and the estuary in search of sustenance, we will find, in a close relationship with water, not only valuable ecosystems, but also, in the domain of intangible heritage, various activities and know-how linked to fishing, shellfishing, salt production, maritime and river navigation.

Along a route that includes the various areas of the county with potential, identified on a map that will be delivered on the same day, it is intended that those enrolled in the 2nd photographic race set out to discover and photographically record buildings (noras, fountains, wells, tanks, cisterns, weirs,…) as well as associated vegetable gardens and orchards; areas of environmental and scenic value linked to water (Ria Formosa, Vila Real de Santo António and Castro Marim marsh, Manta Rota beach, Bay of Monte Gordo, Guadiana river,…); as well as, in the field of intangible cultural heritage, professional activities and know-how related to fishing, shellfishing, salt production and navigation.

The Photographic Race is organized by the Vila Real de Santo António City Council / Cacela Heritage Information and Research Center, with the support of Passeios da Ria Formosa, Restaurante Sem Espinhas and Quinta da Fornalha – Biological Agriculture and Sustainable Ecotourism.

Regulation and registration form available at: http://ciipcacela.wordpress.com/. Applications must be made until September 28, directly at the Heritage Information and Research Center of Cacela, by e-mail [email protected] or telephone 281952600.
