The Secretary of State for Education and School Administration will preside tomorrow, Tuesday, at 11:00 am, at the opening of the school year in the municipality of Alcoutim. The ceremony takes place at the Prof. Joaquim Moreira, in Martim Longo, who, taking advantage of the presence of Joao Casanova de Almeida, will also be inaugurated.
The school in Martim Longo was opened in 1999. During the following years, the Municipality of Alcoutim sent several invitations to the Government, so that the new school could be inaugurated in the municipality. The requests were never answered and after 13 years, the school will now finally be inaugurated.
In recent years, the alcouteneja autarchy has redoubled its support to the municipality's students, seeking to respond to some financial difficulties that now plague many families.
In addition to the scholarships awarded to students attending higher education, the Alcoutim City Council annually grants a subsidy of 300 euros to each class, for collective use in the purchase of school material, and a subsidy to all 1st cycle students , in the total amount of 4.140 euros, with the purpose of helping parents in the acquisition of school textbooks.
In previous years, the municipality already guaranteed the payment of lunch to all children in the 1st cycle, as well as to pre-school students in the county's nurseries, but this year the support was extended to the 2nd and 3rd cycles, now covering about 200 children.
Free school transport and various extracurricular and sporting activities (football, futsal, volleyball, judo, canoeing, swimming, dance, music) are also initiatives by the Alcouteneja autarchy, in order to support and encourage the education of younger people.
Francisco Amaral, president of the Alcoutim Chamber, guarantees that the set of support has worked as an attractive factor for the municipality's schools, “this year there has been an increase in the number of students enrolled in the Alcoutim school, contrary to a trend that had been observed for some years old".
