Portimão joins the European Heritage Days 2012 through a diversified programme, including an exhibition that brings together creations by children and seniors, the exhibition of a documentary, a digital photography competition, a carriage ride along Praia da Rocha and a day and a night in prehistory in Alcalar.

Under the theme “The Future of Memory”, the Conference proposes, between September 21 and October 1, the (re)discovery of Portimão's cultural heritage, with various activities aimed at people of all ages, so that they can value the city's heritage. and the memories of its people.

The program starts on the 21st, at 16 pm, with the inauguration of the exhibition at Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes "The Future of Heritage", which until October 1st presents works carried out by children from the summer ATL and senior groups in the municipality, which produced pieces on canvas where they recreated, imagined and projected their visions of local heritage, in an initiative of the Cultural Action Division - Office for the Promotion and Disclosure of the Heritage of the Municipality of Portimão.

The documentary can be seen on the 27th, 28th and 29th of September in the same cultural facility “In my time, if I remember correctly…”, which gathers reports from citizens that were collected over the last year by that Cabinet. Interested parties will be able to see the exhibition and the film for free, at the following times: Monday to Friday between 2:6 am and 10:00 pm; on Saturdays from 18:30 pm to 15:00 pm.

For the second year, lovers of digital photography will have the opportunity to discover the iconographic legacy of Portimão, participating in the competition "The Future of Memory", scheduled for September 29, from 9:30 am, and whose registration ends on the 25th, the respective form and regulations are available at Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes or at www.cm-portimao.pt.

On the same date, the Portimão Museum team invites you to travel back in time, proposing a day and a night in prehistory, among the megalithic monuments of Alcalar, and allowing an approach to some aspects of the daily life of the community that inhabited that place, around five thousand years ago.

Recreation involves the active participation of visitors in the various pottery, weaving, hunting, grinding, adornment workshops, moving large blocks of stone, “sounds of prehistory” and guided visits to the monuments.

For the first time in Alcalar, and taking advantage of the coincidence of a night with a full moon, the telescopes pointed to the sky will allow us to observe, discover and locate the stars, with the collaboration of Escola Secundária Manuel Teixeira Gomes.

But the night will bring more surprises such as the “Sounds of Prehistory”, produced from instruments made with natural materials and products, to which the unexpected sounds coming from the voices of Grupo Coral Adágio are associated.

Throughout the day, entrance to the Alcalar Interpretation Center will be free, in a partnership between the Municipality of Portimão / Portimão Museum and the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, with the special support of the Manuel Teixeira Gomes School and the Grupo Coral Adágio.

Finally, on September 30th the proposal is a carriage ride between the Hotel da Rocha and the Fortaleza de Santa Catarina, where participants will have the right to a guided tour and historical framing of the monument, with the van departing every half hour, between 15:00 and 18:30, and registration must be made until March 25 at Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes.

The objective of this action is to recreate past atmospheres, creating opportunities for the elderly to relive other times, while the younger ones can experience a completely new experience, thus serving as a pretext to raise an intergenerational interaction and provide the sharing of knowledge.
