On October 27, 1992, the ceremony of the Twinning Act of Lagos with Palos de La Frontera took place, where the two municipalities sealed the commitment to “maintain permanent ties, to favor and encourage exchanges between its inhabitants in all fields , to develop, through a joint understanding, the feeling of universal brotherhood and solidarity and to join forces to contribute to the success of these tasks of peace and prosperity”. Palos de La Frontera was the first city with which Lagos was associated.

From Palos, in 1492, Christopher Columbus and the Pinzón brothers (illustrious businessmen citizens of Palos de La Frontera) set out on the famous journey that led to the discovery of America.

Lagos, as is known, was the place of residence of Infante D. Henrique and the departure port of several Portuguese expeditions, namely the first trip beyond Bojador, led by the lacobrigense Gil Eanes.

♦ In 1990, the intention was to participate in the commemorations of the 500th anniversary of the Portuguese and Spanish Maritime Discoveries, uniting Ports that were linked to the exploration of the discoveries and from which caravels left that gave new worlds to the world; Lagos, Sagres and Palos de La Frontera.
The Clube de Vela de Lagos presented this proposal to Alcaldesa de Palos de La Frontera and the Clube Marítimo de Huelva (Marina de Mazagon did not yet exist). The proposal was accepted and thus emerged the REGATA DOS PORTOS DOS DESCOBRIMENTOS.

♦ The 1990st REGATA DOS PORTOS DOS DESCOBRIMENTOS was disputed in 16, in the month of August, then with three stages; first stage Lagos-Sagres-Portimão; second stage Portimão-Vila Real de Santo António and third stage Vila Real de Santo António-Huelva. XNUMX vessels participated, with the Spanish vessel El Monte won.
The II REGATA had two stages: Palos de La Frontera-Portimão and Portimão-Sagres-Lagos.

♦ Since then, the Regatta has been held every year with considerable participation (61 boats in 1995 in the VI Regata), but with only one stage, alternately starting from Lagos and Palos de La Frontera.

♦ In 2004 and 2006, with the sponsorship of the then Algarve Tourism Region, the Municipality of Lagos, the Marina de Lagos, the Ayuntamiento de Palos de La Frontera and the Marina de Mazagon, the Good Hope Caravel accompanied the Regatta to Spain with guests, with a large part of the crew consisting of students from CVL sailing schools and Lagos schools.

♦ From 2007 until this date, the Regatta has been regularly held, always with a high number of vessels with the flag of several countries.

♦ In 2008 the minimum time for this test was reached by the vessel DUENDE 52, with a time of 11 hours, 51 minutes and 26 seconds.
