The WTCC (World Touring Car Championship), taking place this weekend at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve together with the Iberian Supercars Series/Portuguese Cup of Circuits, Auto GP, Maserati Trophy and the Portuguese Classics Championship and Classics 1300, kicked off this Saturday in style. Lots of entertainment at an event whose main protagonist is the Portuguese Tiago Monteiro.

WTCC Drivers and Machines entered the track early in the morning for the first free practice sessions, so that, in the early afternoon, the qualifying session could take place.

The Italian driver Grabriele Tarquini (SEAT) broke the hegemony of the Chevrolet men and secured the 'pole position' for the first race, being the only driver to run below the second 54th.

Close behind was defending champion and Championship leader Yvan Muller (Chevrolet), followed by Norbert Michelisz (BMW) in third place. Tiago Monteiro was eighth fastest, which will allow him to come out for the second race from third place on the grid.

In addition to the WTCC, the Iberian Supercars Series | Portugal Cup de Circuitos was also in action for the first race of the weekend.

A very lively race, in incidents and fights, with César Campaniço / Carlos Vieira (Audi) assuring the victory. Patrick Cunha / José Ramos (Lamborghini) were in second and José Pedro Fontes / Miguel Barbosa (Mercedes) in third.

In the first race of AutoGP, the big winner was the English driver Adrian Quaife-Hobbs, followed by the Norwegian Pal Varhaug and Sergey Sirotkin.

This Sunday, the day will be long with races and lots of animations in the paddock with the autograph session with the WTCC drivers taking place at 11am. Those who do not have the opportunity to travel to the circuit will be able to follow the races on RTP2.
