Collecting water samples from the Gilão River and analyzing them in the mini-laboratories that will be set up are some of the activities planned at Rioblitz – Be a Scientist for a Day!, organized by the Centro Ciência Viva de Tavira (CCVT) in partnership with the City Council, on the 8th and 9th of June, in Tavira.

This event is part of the Rio Project – a factor for the development and enhancement of Tavira as part of the European PLACES Project – Cities of Scientific Culture, and aims to raise awareness about the management of water resources in the region and promote Environmental Volunteering for Water .

The Environmental Volunteering for Water aims to contribute to the enhancement and improvement of the quality of water resources in the Algarve, by raising awareness of water issues and mobilizing society towards voluntary work, with a view to implementing the Water Framework Directive and the goals of the Earth Charter.

Water is a precious resource and its absence or its presence in inadequate quantity or quality has been one of the main limiting factors for social and economic growth in various regions of the world.

Thus, on June 8, Rioblitz will take place at CCVT from 17:30 pm, with two lectures: the first presentation will be given by Paula Vaz (ARH) on Bioindicators of water quality, followed by Augusta Carvalho, from Escola Secundária de Tavira will exhibit some of the results of monitoring the River Gilão using foraminifera as bioindicators.

These presentations serve as a motto for the sampling campaigns that will take place the following day.

The activities on June 9th, with the collaboration of Ciência Viva do Algarve and Professor Augusta Carvalho, will start with a campaign to sample aquatic organisms on the banks of the Gilão River.

During the afternoon, in the mini-laboratories set up in outdoor tents in Jardim do Coreto, in Tavira, there will be the screening and identification of the captured organisms, thus helping to discover the water quality of the Gilão River.

Participation in the activities is free, but requires registration, which can be done by phone (281 326 231) or email ([email protected]).
