The Odelouca Dam began this Friday, June 1st, to supply water to the Barlavento Algarve, announced the company Águas do Algarve.

According to the company, this dam, which began to be planned in 1972, «is an aspiration of all entities and scholars of public supply and a guarantee of water in quantity for the Barlavento Algarve».

Before the construction of this reservoir, the entire Barlavento Algarvio Multimunicipal System, then managed by Águas do Barlavento Algarvio SA, was based on the primary system constituted by the Odelouca Dam and the Odelouca-Funcho Tunnel.

The construction of Odelouca was postponed, having started its construction in October 2001, being the owner of the work then INAG.

After a complaint to the European Commission by environmental associations, in particular the League for the Protection of Nature, the work was suspended in November 2003.

At the end of December 2006, after the establishment of measures to mitigate the dam's environmental impacts, the conclusion of the construction of the Odelouca Dam was entrusted to Águas do Algarve, through an assignment of the contract's contractual position with INAG.

Construction of the Dam began in February 2007 and was completed in June 2010.

«Since then, until the present date, all legal obligations for filling the dam reservoir have been fulfilled until, finally, authorization was given by the High Water Authority (INAG) for the full filling of the reservoir to take place» , explains the responsible company.

After this authorization and completion of all the necessary works for the physical connection of the dam to the Alcantarilha ETA, Águas do Algarve announces that as of this Friday, «the water from the Odelouca Dam reaches the final consumer, ie, the user municipal".
