From the 8th to the 10th of June, the Memmo Baleeira Hotel, in Sagres, hosts the 1st International Conference on Surf Medicine, organized by the European Association of Surfing Doctors (EASD), with the support of the Vila do Bispo City Council.
During the work, panels will be presented with themes related to sports medicine linked to the modality of surfing, namely sports medicine, orthopedics, traumatology, ophthalmology and dermatology.
To open the program, the organization chose the theme "Traumatology, hypothermia and wilderness medicine" followed by panels with themes such as "Epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology and on diagnosis of trauma in surfers", "Head injury and cervical spine trauma" , “Stings and bites by marine animals: pathophyiology and treatment” among others.
On the second day of work, the main panel will be “Surviving the sun, tropics and surfing psychology”, which will address topics such as “Tropical infectious diseases and surfing”, “The surfer's ear”, “Surfing psychology and neurobiology”, and “Public health projects originating through surfing” among others.
The program also includes two workshops: “Hands-on Wilderness medicine and first aid for surfers” and “Find the perfect Wave; learn to read the meteorological map”.
According to the organization, the progress of the “program is dependent on the behavior of the ocean. We surfed when the waves were good and we will do the Workshops and the lectures in between”.
