"They spoiled man's life!" It was with these words that Tânia Oliveira, president of the Armação de Pêra Fishermen's Association, commented on the theft of a fishing vessel's engine, worth 8000 euros, which occurred this morning on that beach.

“This is a tragedy. We don't have insurance that covers at least part of the damage, because nobody has the money to pay them. How is it that man now goes overboard to earn a living? You can't…», added Tânia Oliveira.

According to the association's president, this is not the first time that thefts of this type have taken place in the fishing community of Armação de Pêra, although the most frequent is theft of fuel tanks. Even because an engine is something to weigh about 200 kilos, difficult to transport, which indicates that there will be more than one criminal involved.

“The authorities come here, take note of the complaints, but we are left with the loss. This is a contrived insecurity. These thefts are always happening, leaving fishermen in misery», said Tânia Oliveira.

“The authorities even collaborate with us. Whenever we call them, to identify someone or because of situations like this, they come here immediately. They know what our life is and understand our difficulties. But even for the authorities, this area is dangerous at night, due to the lack of lighting. Even the authorities are at risk here».

For the president of the Fishermen's Association, the solution would be to install lighting and even surveillance cameras on the beach, in the area where fishing boats are moored.

“We've been asking the City of Silves for this for two years now, but the answer is always the same: there is no money”. For this reason, at the next session of the Chamber, Tânia Oliveira promises that she will again demand from the local authority the improvement of the safety conditions of the fishing community of Armação de Pêra.

“They have to understand that we don't go there to piss off. For us this is a matter of survival. We cannot give up», he concluded.
