16 Portuguese, Belgian, Polish and English youngsters participate in the Algarve Biodiversity Week, which starts today, April 30th, and continues until May 11th in the parish of Mexilhoeira Grande, Portimão.

This project is the result of a partnership between Associação A Rocha and the organizations “Youth for Nature and Environment” in Belgium, “Biodiversity Explorers” in Poland and “Eco-explore” in the United Kingdom and is co-financed by the European Union (Youth in Action, Action 1.1).

Young people, aged between 18 and 26, will participate in monitoring and collecting information on the unique biodiversity in the municipality of Portimão with the aim of awakening people to the Algarve's environmental wealth.

The young people will be guided by a team consisting of technicians from Associação A Rocha, volunteers from different countries and will also have the support of Portuguese experts in fauna and flora.

The final result of the project will be the production of a scientific report, which will have a public presentation, and a photographic exhibition that will be on display at the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos on a date to be agreed.

The A Rocha Association (www.arocha.org) is an Environmental Non-Governmental Organization, which has developed an important scientific and environmental education work in favor of nature conservation in the Natura 2000 site in Ria de Alvor, and other places in the Algarve.

This work has even been recognized internationally, namely with the attribution of an honorable mention by the European Union in 2011 (www.youthweek.eu/wp-content/themes/teamwork/awards/YiA_EVS_EN.pdf).
