The village of Monchique was without telecommunications for several hours due to damage to a fiber optic cable caused by a theft of copper wire in the area of Rasmalho, municipality of Portimão. The village was left without a telephone line, internet, cell phones and cable television between 3:30 am and mid-morning this Monday.

GNR source, contacted by Sul Informação, confirmed the robbery, explaining that 100 meters of copper wire were stolen, and the individuals who committed the illicit act damaged a fiber optic line that passed near the place.

Rui André, mayor of Monchique, speaking to the Sul Informação he pointed out the seriousness of the situation and even added that he would ask PT for an urgent meeting because, according to him, "there cannot be this degree of dependence on a wire, located outside the municipality's limits and, whose damage, left the isolated village for several hours, without telephones, mobile phones, internet and television».

The mayor highlights the fragility of the telecommunications supply and even makes ironic remarks about the situation: «any day a man is digging with his hoe, hits a fiber optic wire, and leaves the town with no communications...».
