The submission of works nominated for the prize of the Literary Competition “Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen”, an annual initiative of the Municipal Councils of Lagos and Loulé, runs until the 9th of May. The Contest aims to encourage the reading of the works of this well-known poet.
This 8th edition of the competition, which is once again the result of the partnership established between the Municipal Libraries Dr. Júlio Dantas de Lagos and Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen de Loulé, aims to sensitize students in the 3rd cycle and secondary education in Algarve schools to read the works of one of the most important poets and writers of the XNUMXth century. XX, who chose the Algarve and Lagos to live.
The choice for the name of this literary competition and the fact that these two libraries are promoting it also took into account some facts: Lagos it was one of the cities that inspired several texts, the city where Sophia lived and spent some of her summer vacations, and which paid homage to her, immortalizing part of one of her poems in the Avenida Municipal Market; Loulé, on the other hand, paid homage to the poet by giving her name to her municipal library.
The high pedagogical interest of the work, and the fact that it is an integral part of school curricula, in Portuguese subjects, was not forgotten either.
With regard to the competition, works of poetry, prose or essays, in Portuguese, and illustrations that focus on the literary work of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen are accepted.
The works in the competition must be delivered by May 9 to the municipal libraries of Lagos and Loulé.
All students who attend schools of the 3rd cycle of basic education and secondary education (or equivalent) in the Algarve region can submit works.
The prizes are divided into categories and those relating to the Poetry, Prose and Essay Category are awarded, in Gift Cards, as follows: 1st place: €300 + 10 books; 2nd place: €150 + 5 books; 3rd place: €75 + 3 books.
With regard to the Illustration Category, each group (primary and secondary students) will be allocated €250 + 10 books.
The following prizes are awarded to the schools attended by the awarded students: 1st place – 10 books; 2nd – 5 books; 3rd – 3 books.
