Portimão was considered the “bluest” municipality in the Algarve under the 2011 European Blue Flag program, due to the awareness and environmental education activities promoted on its beaches and aimed at children and adults.
The award was decided by the national jury of the Blue Flag Program, taking into account a set of six mandatory activities, of which two should address the annual theme “Sea – History and Resources”.
Among the initiatives developed last year by the Portimão City Council's environmental education and nature conservation team, the actions “Colors and forms of nature”, “Sea, history and resources – discovering the seabed”, “ Let's get to know the dunes”, “Birds – living beings that fascinate”, “The river and streams of our land” and “Blue Gymkhana”.
