Paris and Hawaii intersect in the Central Algarve

The show's name refers to remote places and cultures, but its DNA and inspiration are 17% Algarve. The production «Paris, Praia do Hawaii» will have its world premiere at the Cine-Teatro de Loulé on Saturday, March XNUMXth and is the result of a collective exercise in the creation of three renowned creators and interpreters and musicians recruited in the region , which toured the Central Algarve .

This is another production carried out within the scope of the «Movimenta-te» network, created within the scope of the Algarve Central cities network, which brings together Faro, Loulé, Olhão, São Brás de Alportel and Tavira. It is also a deeper rehearsal of what was the show «Vale», which toured the five municipalities at the end of 2011, where the local population was called to step onto the stage.

In «Paris, Praia do Hawaii», local collaboration goes far beyond participation. The three creators invited to raise this project, choreographer Madalena Victorino, dancer Ainhoa Vidal and director Gonçalo Amorim wanted this to be a collective creation and, in a way, largely abdicated their role as leaders to make room for ideas interpreters they recruited in the Algarve, many of whom were from the Algarve.

The three creators were the guests of this week's radio program «Impressions», organized jointly by the Sul Informação and by Rádio Universitária do Algarve RUA FM. The entire interview can be heard on Saturday, the day the show opens, on 102.7 FM or on www.street.pt.

Why does a production with such a strong regional character refer to places that apparently have little to do with the Algarve?

«It's an unusual title, to draw attention and to think about the Algarve in a different way, with humor, with the beach for sure, but not only that. Sometimes the Algarve looks like Paris, when you walk into a bar at night, but it can also look like Hawaii, when on the beaches the huts are no longer the striped awnings that we recognize as Portuguese», explained Madalena Victorino, who prefers to talk about «looking different” on the region and not in criticism.

«The Algarve is also a Paris, a great city. It is very cosmopolitan, it has a lot of city of light and a lot of transforming potential, as it has always been a place where many peoples meet and where many people go looking for opportunities», considered Gonçalo Amorim.

«The show has something of a documentary, it is a fictional documentary. And the narrative behind it is the impact that this Algarve territory, in its diversity, had on our team. In our seven co-creators and in ourselves. And that is what is reflected in the scene», referred Gonçalo Amorim.

The show has "huge human wealth"

“There is an enormous human wealth in this spectacle. From the musicians guided by Zé Eduardo, who lives here in Faro, the performers, who are mostly creators and from the Algarve, and the sea of people who come from these five municipalities, who join us to offer their own people, the People of Paris, to the show. And, in this sense, it is a spectacle of great richness and beauty», said Madalena Victorino.

«There were very interesting encounters, in this process, we discovered fascinating people. From the inventor of surfboards and plastic artist Octávio Lourenço de São brás de Alportel, to Marco Conceição, who decided to transform his house into a museum dedicated to the legends of the region», added the choreographer.

The breeding process was, moreover, inclusive, with guest breeders and their counterparts recruited in the region doing a lot of fieldwork.

“We started by having a series of tours, guided by local people. From entering a cafe, meeting fishermen and joining their conversations, going to places where they work, such as the fish market. We always had that external look that tries to enter into the experiences of these people», said Ainhoa Vidal.

Contacts that are also with the places that want to be transported to the stage. “We tried to have the body on a beach, when it's also on stage, or to find the body of the sheep or shepherd we saw. And it's also talking to people and realizing what their real experience is and what they want to share, not just the one we think they have», added the Spanish dancer.

The documentary part already mentioned by Gonçalo Amorim will be reinforced by a video projection, under the responsibility of Mauro Amaral. Ainhoa Vidal gives the example of a scene about the Airport of Faro, where people enter «as a great power». «They put a real situation on stage for us», he summarizes.
