An exercise to combat Hydrocarbon Pollution at Sea will take place on Wednesday, the 15th, between 9 am and 14 pm, at the commercial wharf in Faro.

This exercise, the first of two planned for 2012, will be conducted by the Navy/Maritime Authority, through the Southern Maritime Department, and aims to train and evaluate the performance of intervention teams from the Southern Maritime Department and the Port Captaincy in Faro in response to the most likely incidents.

The scenario to be created intends to simulate the response to an accidental spill as a result of the collision of a medium-sized ship against the pier.

"At the time of this occurrence with the upholstery of the beach-sea, the urgency of containment and collection actions are essential to retain the medium hydrocarbon smudges in the damaged area, preventing their spread in the Ria Formosa", explains the Navy, in a statement.

In order to minimize environmental damage in the waters of the Ria Formosa, barriers will be placed to contain the spill and two collection points will be installed with a recovery point at each point, and the entire system for transferring the oil collected.

Simultaneously, the beach and stones that were affected by the polluting products are cleaned.

The following entities were invited to participate in the exercise: National Civil Protection Authority (ANPC), Nature Conservation and Biodiversity Institute, Southern Classified Area Management Department – Ria Formosa Natural Park, Port and Maritime Transport Institute, Southern Delegation (IPTM Faro), City Council of Faro, University of Algarve, Faculty of Marine Sciences and Sociedade Farense das Areias (Sofaeia).
