This Wednesday, November 16th, the Portuguese Navy promotes free visits to the lighthouses, namely those of Cabo S. Vicente, Alfanzina and Vila Real de Santo António, in the Algarve, to mark the National Navy Day.

Thus, the lighthouses that are open to the public free of charge, from 14:00 to 17:00, are Montedor, Leça, Aveiro, Cabo Mondego, Penedo da Saudade, Cabo Carvoeiro, Cabo S. Vicente, Cabo da Roca, Cabo Espichel, Alfanzina and Vila Real de Santo António, in mainland Portugal, the Farol Ponta do Pargo, in Madeira and the Gonçalo Velho Lighthouses (Santa Maria Island), Arnel and Ferraria (S. Miguel Island), Contendas (Third Island), Ponta da Barca (Graciosa Island), Ponta do Topo (Island from São Jorge) Ponta da Ilha (Island of Pico) and Albarnaz (Island of Flores), in the Azores.

The Navy also promotes other activities throughout the country, which aim to highlight the importance of the sea for national development. Thus, the Museu de Marinha, the Vasco da Gama Aquarium, the Calouste Gulbenkian Planetarium and the Museological Pole of the Farol of Cabo de S. Vicente and the Maritime Museum Almirante Ramalho Ortigão, in Faro.

For its part, the Museu de Marinha and its "Oficina Viva de Modelismo" will also develop the following activities: full operation of the "Oficina Viva de Modelismo Nautico" with the 1st Course of Nautical Modeling underway, with the construction of the sailboats Portuguese light sailing “Vouga”; Shipbuilding workshop for children, with small models that children can build; placement of farothe island in the lake next to the Pavilhão das Galeotas, as well as radio-controlled vessels that can be “piloted” by everyone, so that there is an interaction with the “Sea”; Exhibition of static and radio-controlled models at Oficina Viva, drawing attention to what can be done in terms of emblematic models, either for their construction, dimensions and beauty, or because they are mostly typical Portuguese vessels.

The Vasco da Gama Aquarium will inaugurate, at 18 pm, a temporary exhibition entitled “Vasco da Gama Aquarium – Supporting Research to Disseminate Science”.

The NRP Cuanza ship is open for visits between 14:00 and 16:30, at the Marégrafo Pier, in Leixões (the schedules shown are subject to possible changes and/or cancellation due to the ship's planning).
