The City Council of São Brás de Alportel launches the challenge «discover… where the music will be», on the 1st of October. The surprise will mark World Music Day, when residents and visitors meet with joyful melodies throughout the municipality.

Established since 1975 by the International Music Council, this date aims to promote peace and friendship between peoples through the universal language that is music. In São Brás de Alportel, World Music Day is part of a series of initiatives and events that aim to take music to the streets and show the diversity of sounds and emotions expressed in small musical notes.

This year, the celebrations of this date count on the participation of a group of people, composed of a hundred musicians and dancers from São Bras, who will introduce various instruments such as clarinets, guitars, flutes, accordions, fertilizers, bass drums, irons , tambourines, reco-recos, as well as various singing styles, from choral to traditional music.

On Saturday, the first rays of the sun will be accompanied by interpretations of music, singing and dancing by this group, which will take place next to the Municipal Market, Roberto Nobre Park, Taxi Square, Jardim Carrera Viegas and in the commercial areas of São Brás de Alportel. Throughout the day, surprises continue in various locations in the city so that the music can live and feel without prior notice.

The music is on the street, but it will also reach the Municipal Library, which promotes «Uma Festa de Sopros», organized by the City Hall and by the Philharmonic Band of São Brás de Alportel. Starting at 16 pm, this party will meet young people of all ages to make known and experience various musical instruments such as the saxophone, the trumpet, the flute and the trombone.

The Algarve Jazz Orchestra – Redux closes World Music Day, at the Cine-Teatro São Brás, at 21 pm, with a show filled with themes from the American songbook or more jazzy and deep-rooted themes, especially in be-bop or hard- bop (from the 30s to the 40s), without forgetting the Latin mergers such as bossa-nova.

Organized by Associação Cultural Sambrasense, with the support of the City Council of São Brás de Alportel and the Portuguese Youth Institute, this concert takes 6 to 8 musicians on stage with wind instruments, double bass, drums, piano or guitar, and voice ( male or female) for unforgettable interpretations.

Throughout the month of October, music continues to be present in São Brás de Alportel, with the Concert of Philharmonic Bands, at the Cine-Teatro São Brás, scheduled for the 5th, public holiday on which marks the Republic Day. at 17:00 pm. This initiative, promoted by Inatel in partnership with the local City Council, reveals the melodies of three different bands: Band from Associação Cultural e Recreativa Escola de Música Sambrasense (São Brás de Alportel Philharmonic Band), Band from Sociedade Filarmónica Artistas de Minerva and Band of the Sociedade Filarmónica Lacobrigense 1º de Maio.

The World Music Day celebrations culminate on the 15th, at 21 pm, at the Cine-Teatro São Brás to the sound of traditional Portuguese music with the show «Fado Maior», which features Afonso Dias and Ana Marques in the main voices.

«The stringed instruments will include Vítor do Carmo (Portuguese guitar), José Santana (Fado guitar) and Tó Correia (double bass) to pay homage to the greatest representative of Portuguese urban culture: fado», explained the City Council of São Brás in a note press release. The show includes the interpretation of traditional fados by the great names of Portuguese music, but also by poets such as Camões, Eugénio de Andrade, O'Neill, Natália Correia, Florbela Espanca, António Gedeão and David Mourão-Ferreira.
