Government decrees alert situation between Sunday and Tuesday because of the risk of fire

Situation will be reassessed on Monday, at the end of the day

The entire territory of mainland Portugal will be on alert between the 21st and 23rd of August – from Sunday to Tuesday – due to the risk of fires, announced the Minister of Internal Administration, after a meeting at the National Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC), in Carnaxide.

José Luís Carneiro said that the situation will be reassessed on Monday at the end of the day, to decide on “the need to maintain or change the alert situation”.

The alert situation implies the prohibition of access, circulation and permanence within the forest areas, previously defined in the municipal plans for the defense of the forest against fires, as well as on forest paths, rural paths and other roads that cross them, being also prohibited the carrying out fires and burning of leftovers from exploitation.

The alert status also applies to the firefighters preparedness state, which increases in level.

Because forecast of rising temperatures, combined with the low humidity and increased wind speed, the risk of fire for the next few days is very high across the country.
