The future of Alagoas Brancas will be under discussion

The initiative will bring together citizens, associations, environmental organizations, academics, government entities and the municipality of Lagoa

The future of Alagoas Brancas will be discussed on April 20th, starting at 10 am, in a participatory session open to the community, in the Auditorium of the Convento de São José, in Lagoa. 

The initiative will bring together citizens, associations, environmental organizations, academics, government entities and the municipality of Lagoa. The objective is to present the unique ecological values ​​of this wetland, located next to the city, and create proposals for its preservation in a future City Park.

During the morning, there will be a presentation of the values ​​of Alagoas Brancas and the challenges that preserving a wetland close to the urban environment entails. Topics of water planning and management, botany, invertebrates and birdlife will be covered.

At that time, the results of the bioblitz which took place last February – an event in which, in just one day, a group of experts dedicated themselves to identifying as many species as possible in this area.

Some of the already known environmental values ​​of Alagoas Brancas will be highlighted. In addition to its bird biodiversity (counting 143 species of birds on the EBird citizen science platform), data on invertebrates and hydrobotany will be revealed.

Of the rare community of aquatic plants discovered here, special emphasis will be given to the water star, damasonium bourgaei, critically endangered in Portugal, which has its largest national population in Alagoas Brancas.

The afternoon begins with a work session in which groups of experts from various areas will debate concrete approaches and plans to ensure the preservation of Alagoas Brancas in a future Lagoa City Park. The result will then be made available in a single document.

These proposals will be presented to the community from 16pm, opening space for debate and contributions from all interested parties.

A round table will follow, moderated by Elisabete Rodrigues, director of Sul Informação, which will feature the participation of representatives from the Municipality of Lagoa, ICNF – Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests, APA/ARH Algarve – Portuguese Environment Agency/Administration of the Algarve Hydrographic Region, CCDR Algarve – Coordination Committee and Regional Development of the Algarve, the Movement to Save Alagoas Brancas and several environmental non-governmental organizations.
