Nurses on strike for five days in late April and early May

On May 3rd, the strike covers professionals who work in institutions in the South region

Several nurses' union structures called a five-day strike for the end of April and beginning of May, on the mainland and islands, for salary and career reviews and the hiring of more professionals.

According to the advance notice published today in the press, the strike, which will take place on the 26th, 29th and 30th of April and the 2nd and 3rd of May (in the South), also serves as a way for nurses to demand the negotiation of collective labor agreements in the private and social sectors, defining salary tables that are never lower than those practiced in the National Health Service.

They also ask for a “fair, transparent and enforceable” evaluation and performance model, measures that recognize and minimize risk, as well as the wear and tear of the profession and the integration of nurses with precarious contracts into public, private and social services.

The strike covers public service institutions and those in the social and private sectors on the continent and in the autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira, on a regional basis depending on the day.

On the first day (26), the strike takes place in the North region, on the 29th of April in the Azores and on the 30th in Madeira.

On May 2nd, the strike covers professionals working in institutions in the Center region and on the 3rd those in the South region.

Minimum services include work provided in emergency situations in permanent care units that operate 24 hours a day, in intensive care units, in the operating room, with the exception of scheduled surgeries, and in emergency services, in addition to hemodialysis and of oncological treatments.

In the oncology area, the minimum services cover surgeries or the beginning of treatment for diseases initially diagnosed and classified as priority levels 4 and 3, in the latter case "when there is medical determination" to carry out the surgery and it cannot be scheduled for the following 15 days.

Nursing care will also be provided in the continuity of scheduled and ongoing oncological treatments, as well as in chemotherapy and radiotherapy therapeutic programs, through planned treatment sessions, as well as daily prescription treatments in an outpatient clinic.

Other situations of surgeries scheduled without priorities 3 or 4 must be considered "in accordance with the institutions' contingency plan" for situations similar to point tolerances (announced with short notice) and cases of surgery cancellations on the same day due to unfeasibility of carrying them out during normal staff or operating room hours.

In cases of 'day hospital', nursing services are also guaranteed, according to the advance notice.

The strike is called by the National Nurses Union (SNE), the Nurses Union (SE), the Independent Union of Nursing Professionals (SIPENF), the Independent Union of All United Nurses (SITEU) and the Democratic Union of Nurses of Portugal (SINDEPOR). ).

The last strike by nurses took place on March 15, called by the Portuguese Nurses Union (SEP).
