Revitalgarve promotes organic farming outreach

On the 11th of March at 10:00 pm

The Horto Experimentation Center – Frutícola do Patacão / Innovation Hub of Faro, hosts on March 11th, at 10 am, an Outreach Action on Organic Agriculture.

The action takes place within the scope of the Revitalgarve Project – Revitalization of rural areas in the Algarve: resilience and innovation in the creation of territorial food systems, financed under the PRR.

The visit to the Broad Bean Trial integrated in the Organic Agriculture Program (AB) of the Innovation Hub Project of Faro (PRR), its main objectives are to compare the production of 10 varieties of broad beans, namely traditional varieties and their adaptation to AB and the edapho-climatic conditions of the Algarve region, as well as monitoring pests, diseases and crop auxiliaries, in this mode of production.

The trial was installed/sown on November 14th last year, with a randomized block experimental design, with 10 treatments, corresponding to the number of varieties used. Each treatment has 3 replications (3 test lines, with 30 plants each), with a spacing of 0,80m X 0,2m (planting density of 6,25 plants/m2).

The visit to the Citrus Trial (Laranjeira Lane Late and Tangerineira Ortanique) in Conventional Agriculture (AC)/Organic Agriculture (AB), aims, according to the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Algarve, «to demonstrate the technical viability of organic cultivation of citrus fruits according to the cultural practices authorized in AB (as well as monitoring pests, diseases and auxiliaries of these crops), comparing them with the AC».

This is a trial whose rootstocks (from Citranjeira Carrizo) were installed/planted on June 4, 2014, in a 6m x 4m space. The plants have localized irrigation, with the AB screen on the line, to control weeds.
